My work begins as a series of sketches in charcoal, ink and watercolor to study and determine composition, then continues as a set of gouache or oil paintings on unstretched linen to consider color theory and sticking. I find these individual pieces quite superficial yet freeing. The antithesis of what I want to do with my work. Requiring no demands of the viewer, but often quite beautiful.
